Welch Plaza Case Study

Project

  • Multi-family housing development consisting of 162 apartments in the heart of the Central District of Seattle, including:
    • Three separate buildings providing a range of floorplans and styles, including studios, one- and two-bedroom units

    • Two levels of underground parking with 209 stalls

    • Landscaped courtyards and decks

    • Ground level commercial, including a bank branch, a sandwich shop, and offices
       
  • Takes its name from the former Welch Hardware Store that was a fixture in the neighborhood until it closed in 1998

  • A key anchor for the intersection where it is built, it will provide market-rate and affordable housing

  • Complements the robust retail district located across the street

  • Construction began in 2002. The first phase opened in November 2003, and the remainder will open in February 2004

  • The project is located in an economic development area and has received extensive financial and political support from the City of Seattle
